Japan 2004

My first year living in Kyoto, Japan. Far too many photos to show them all here, but here are a few highlights!

April: Dormitory in Oubaku, where I lived for 6 months View of Uji City from dorm With some friends from Japanese class
A party by the river - cold!! At Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto My first sanga game - most impress with pitchside entertainment!
May: Saikou and Kida from lab, at BBQ Post-party, with English Speaking club An early karaoke session...many followed!
Friends in karaoke Hikone castle, Shiga-ken Mum and dad at Kyodai
Mud and Dad at Toji Some monks, at Toji Cats, also at Toji!
June: Fireworks at the English Club bbq! Rainy season, and rainbows, arrive at uni. With some friends watching Sanga play!
Still like the dance routines :) Football is played too though! Evening games are particularily good...
July: At an Izakaya with the guys from the lab. Akita-san and Mizu-san fooling around! Lab group photo
Dressed in yukata ready for the Gion Festival. With Ton, a friend from Thailand. Now with Yuchi, a friend from Taiwan - you can tell how hot it is from all the sweat! With some friends from class ready to go into an izakaya, and cool down a bit!
Ahhhhhh...cooling beer! At last!! At a culture demonstration. I believe this is a chinese dance... Still at the demonstration day, this dance being from Japan.
From dancing to tea ceremony. Traditional koto and shamisen. Yuchi, having just served the tea. With a friend, Tamaki, from Kobe. We first met in England, via AJS.
August: At Tokyo Disneyland...a great day! Like being a kid again! These two, like many others, swap suits for mickey mouse ears for the day. And look at the joy on the guy's face! In front of Winnie the Poo's Honey Hunt - a class ride if ever there was one...
With Katie in front of the castle With some of Katie's friends in Funabshi At a waterfall in Nikko. A wonderful place, such a contrast from Toyko.
A deer cooling down from the summer heat - Nikko A dragonfly, ready to fly! Another beautiful waterfall, again in Nikko
Lakes and mountains...nice scenary in Nikko, no mistake! The nice, but bizarre, Odaiba. A bay area near Tokyo A praying mantis next to my door! Look at his cute little face!
September: A rikshaw at the end of a path, in the midst of a bamboo forest. Arashiyama. A small temple set in a moss garden, again in Arashiyama. Katie's head joins that of 8000 budhas. A temple in Arashiyama.
A small shrine in the forested valley of Kurama. More Kurama scenery. The steps on the way up towards the road my flat is on. Love dragging the bike up here...
Playing table footie in the pub with friends from class! And drinking beer from...measuring tubes? More karaoke! This time, with Wolfgang and co.
October: Back to Arashiyama, this time with Dave and Sam from England We saw some "geisha", but not the real thing - tourists dressed up to act the part I think! Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) - nice place...not as flashy as it's Golden relative...
Himeji Castle. Very impressive, but will be remembered as the place where Sam dropped his JR Railpass! The Kobe harbour. Sam and Dave, at Kobe harbour.
Getting ready for the Kurama Fire festival. With class mates. It's pretty cold, but the beer helps! The kids also get to carry some fire, making for some dangerous moments!
The guys get to carry the big ones, although not so big on the clothing side... Fire festival heats up...no wonder so many temples burn down. And again - this was a very impressive festival. Or so I thought anyway.
November: A drinking party with friends from English speaking soc. And again. Bizarre picture! The Kyoto Uni Festival, anothe chance for the cheerleaders to dance!
Momiji (autumn leaf viewing) action ahoy! A pagoda rises from above all the red leaves...! These ones are pretty bright!
The view of Kyoto from Daimonjiyama. December: Live Beatles cover performance at Ringo. Small piccy, because from phone (before I knew it could do big ones!) And on my way home to England for the hols!
